How can we reap the benefits of Al while minimising or mitigating the risks? How can we ensure that those benefits are equitably distributed? How can we manage the inevitable disruptions that Al will cause to society, to the economy, to our political systems?
This research thrust will draw on diverse bodies of scholarship to address these and other questions that
examine the actual and potential impact — positive and negative — of AI.
The AI Governance and Policy Team at NUS AI Institute has convened a series of roundtables for representatives from industry, government, and academia to discuss responsible AI. Such discussions are typically too narrow and too broad. Too narrow in that a few voices dominate the discussion – notably those in the United States and Europe, with China sometimes included. Too broad in that discussion is often limited to generalities and principles.
This project aims to address both aspects of this problem, involving a wider set of stakeholders — in particular those from Southeast Asia — in more focused discussions of specific challenges in the application of responsible AI to particular questions.
Reports from our AI Governance Roundtables, including discussions with stakeholders across Southeast Asia, are available in the link below.
